Top 6 Website Design Mistakes to Steer Clear of for a Successful Online Presence

Writer: Muizzuddin MoniMuizzuddin Moni

Hello again and welcome back to this weekly blog. We’ve covered all the DO’s of making your agency website successful. Now, let me let you in on the industry DON’Ts, the things you DEFINITELY want to avoid when making your website.

Cluttered Layouts

Starting off, no one (and I mean literally no one) wants to visit a website and get absolutely bombarded with information left, right, and center. This happens when the layout for a website is cluttered. Compare the two pictures below, which one would you rather be greeted with?

Colorful car leasing website with vibrant graphics, text ads, and navigation menu. Includes search bar, Twitter feed, and promotional banners.
Yellow lightning bolt on black background with red burst and bold "VS" text in white, creating a dynamic and competitive vibe.
Website homepage with a product menu, webinar ad, and newest products section. Blue and white theme, tech-focused content, busy layout.

A clear-cut and clean website layout with an intuitive design draws users in without giving them an eyesore

Lack of Mobile Optimization

Devices displaying a website with a blue theme: laptop, desktop, tablet, and smartphone. Text reads "A Complete IT Solution Provider."

It’s 2025 and technology has advanced beyond our wildest imaginations. The age of bulky computers and even laptops is reaching its end as our mobile devices become more powerful than ever. If you don’t make your website mobile-friendly, chances are you’re going to lose a lot potential visitors to your website. Mobile devices have become a modern necessity and are much more convenient to use. If you’ve been putting off making your website compatible with different devices, you better get to it right now.

Poor Navigation

Another solid entry into our list of DON’Ts is creating a website with poor navigation. You need to make sure users will be able to find specific information easily and efficiently. Key pages should be highlighted and shown in a menu that’s easy to spot (like my horizontal menu bar at the top of the page). The last thing we’d want is for a user to give up because they weren’t able to find the page they wanted.

Slow Load Times

I bet you’ve seen this more times than you’d like. You know how frustrating it can be on the receiving end. Wix websites already have functions that improve loading times such as automatic image optimization, content delivery network (CDN), defense against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and lazy loading images. For the most part, you should be worry free. If your website is still slow, here’s why and how to solve it:

  1. Caching is disabled – Enable caching to lessen stress on your website’s infrastructure

  2. Heavy media files – Compress your images, use modern image formats (WebP, AVIF) and resize images based on screen size and use alternative media for GIFs.

  3. Unoptimized mobile site

  4. Third party plugins – Fully integrate apps into your website or choose from the Wix App Market instead.

  5. Too many ads – Increase in ads adds toll to your website loading time

Ignoring SEO Basics

As a beginner in website designing, you might choose to ignore search engine optimizations (SEO). Did you know that skipping SEO will hurt your visibility. Without proper SEO, your website relies mostly on clicks from links being shared personally, or via social media. However, imagine if your website was the first result that popped up on Google when someone searched a single keyword. The amount of visits your website would rake it would be phenomenal.

Overlooking Security Features

Now you’ve got your website, there SEEMS to be no problems at all so you carry on with your day. But danger lurks in every corner of the internet.

Green pixelated Creeper face with text: "THATS A NICE HOUSE WOULD BE A SHAME IF SOMEONE RUINED IT?" Creates an ominous mood.

Your website is prone to malicious attacks over networks. It is vital that your website has a SSL certificate; so users know that the website is secure. Luckily, Wix websites use HTTPS and SSL protocols to ensure data in encrypted when sent to and from the user’s browser to your site. Users will trust your website while you don’t have to worry about leaked data.
